"Why aren't you smarter? [drumstick!]"
Posted 16 September, 2007 at 10:22pm by Michael Chu(Filed under: Rant)
So, I've got the TV on while I'm working on my computer and Blade: Trinity comes on TNT (a basic cable station). The opening sequence involves a lot of violence and action where Blade (Wesley Snipes) kills a bunch of vampires and then stakes a human (non-vampire). He asks, "I staked you with silver, why aren't you dead?" and the guy gasps, "Why aren't you smarter?" and then in a COMPLETELY different voice, "Drumstick!". Obviously, TNT felt it necessary to dub over whatever obscenity was originally there, but who came up with the idea to say "Drumstick"?!? Of all the words they could have chosen to fill that spot, "drumstick"?

I saw a version of Dumb and Dumber once on Star, in which the scene where Jim Carey tells the other guy to Kiss his ass got replaced with Kiss My Sandwich. Did that make any sense to you?

In TNT's version of Office Space there were also some pretty odd ones: "well, you can just kiss my eyes!" and "federal pound-me-into-ash prison." The general guideline seems to be 'who cares about it making sense, just make the lip movements match,' as if we can't tell this wasn't the original by the absurdity, totally different voice, and mismatched volume level.

I think I actually prefer them to cut out the voice or to beep it. I actually sat through the rest of the movie and when Ryan Reynold's character shows up, it involves all sorts of editing since he rarely says anything "appropriate" in the movie. In addition, his name tag which reads: HELLO MY NAME IS fuck you in the original was ALTERED in every scene to read suck you! Every scene - even the wide angle shots (I'm watching on HD so I could still read it and see they had altered it)!

Basic cable's an odd duck. A few years ago, my roommate and I were both quite depressed, sitting around and watching Grosse Pointe Blank on (I believe) TNT. At one point John Cusack says, "Dumb fuckin' luck," but the censors decided to dub this with the completely bizarre choice: "Dumb mousey luck." "Dumb mousey luck" thus became synonymous with everything that was not okay with modern media.

My favorite dubbed over curseword was on basic cable. We were watching Die Hard With a Vengeance and they dubbed over Samuel L. Jackson's "motherf….r" with "melon farmer"!
