What I Ate: January 8, 2008

As usual, when working in the City, I ate lunch in front of my computer. I had left overs from last night's rice porridge. (Three servings spaced through the day finished off all the porridge and the rest of the small plates of accompanying food.)

I'm starting to eat more flavorful foods again (finally!) but I'm not going to push it. I went up to the office (Dave's living room in his apartment) in San Francisco today and brought some food with me. Started off with a plain (no condiments) sandwich made of toasted white bread and three slices of Oscar Meyer turkey breast (picked up at the 7-Eleven on my way to work).

After starting the day with half a bagel (no toppings) at church, Tina and I ate at Fresh Choice (we had a bunch of errands to run and halfway through I started getting really hungry so we went to Fresh Choice even though I shouldn't be eating salad yet and Tina didn't feel like salad).
I ended up with just a little hominy from the cold foods section, spaghetti, and a couple bowls of chicken noodle soup.

Started off the day with a piece of toast with a light layer of strawberry jam.
I went to my friend Pete's house for a game playing gathering (played a new board game called Race for the Galaxy) and ate spaghetti with a little red sauce (which I believe was Newman's Own Marinara sauce). I couldn't believe how good it tasted. I've never said this of a canned or jarred spaghetti sauce, but after a week of eating bland foods, that spaghetti sauce was the best tasting sauce I could remember.

Following the advice of my doctor, in addition to saltines, I'm eating white bread - something else that doesn't require much work for the intestines to process.

I had another of the red ramen packets of noodles as well as a chicken thigh (I carefully removed the skin and fat due to my continuing illness).

Day Two of documenting my meals… and day four of my illness.
For lunch, I tried one of the other ramen flavors. This time the blue one.

So, a couple weeks ago I toyed with the idea of starting to document what I ate for the year of 2008 and then assemble it into either a daily calendar (for future years) or a book. Unfortunately on December 30, 2007, I got sick (or bad food poisoning) so this project has started off rather badly. Anyway, I'm going to try to do it, so here's the first entry.
I managed to get down some rice porridge made in an 8-qt pot with 1 cup rice, 4 cups water, 2 cups chicken broth (with a dash of beef broth which was accidental since I thought I grabbed a can of chicken broth), a some salt. The first bowl was fine, but I barely got the second bowl of it down later. Sick food sucks. scraped what was left into a large bowl, plastic wrapped it, and deposited it in the fridge to be thrown out a week later.
