What I Ate: March 2, 2008

In the morning, I ate a maple glazed doughnut.
In the middle of running errands, we stopped at a McDonald's for lunch. I haven't had McDonald's for at least three or four months. When done properly, some of their food is really tasty. I got myself a Filet o'Fish (which when done properly is really tasty - somehow the fish patty, slightly salted blends perfectly with the slice of processed cheese and tartar sauce; sometimes they just screw up and the filet is dry or unsalted or the tartar sauce isn't enough — today was perfect), ten pieces of Chicken McNuggets, and a milk.

For lunch, Tina and I ate some leftovers we had in the fridge. We finished off the pork buns and rice with stewed pork and bean sprouts.

I met Harold for lunch at Red Robin and ordered a Royal (with a fried egg) Guacamole and Bacon Burger.

For lunch, I met with Dave and his company, Sendori, at Garcia's Taqueria. I had my usual of a lengua super quesadilla.

For lunch I had the Square Deal (Drumstick and Thigh with Mashed Potatoes) at KFC and also bought additional corn on the cobs.

On our last day in New York City, we went back to FAO Schwarz to eat their amazing croissant again.
Of course, I had to also order a hot chocolate to go with it.

We started off the day heading out to Liberty Island (where the Statue of Liberty stands). We ate at the cafeteria there and I ended up with a hot dog and fries. Tina had some of my fries and I had some of her pizza.
Travel Tip - New York City - Statue of Liberty

Here's a tip - if you're going to New York City and want to visit the Statue of Liberty, the lines can be incredibly long. Even in the off season, the line up to get through the first security checkpoint (where you go right after buying your ferry tickets) can stretch almost all the way out of Battery Park and onto West St.
So, here's how to skip that part - go to www.statuecruises.com beforehand (I've done it the day before, but it's a good idea to book a little more in advance than that - at least a couple weeks in advance if you want access to the Monument/Pedestal) and book your tickets online. You can also book the audio tour at the same time. As of the writing of this entry, it costs $12 per person ($18 if you get the audio tour).

This morning I discovered that the primary hard drive on the server running both Cooking for Engineers and Orthogonal Thought (this blog) crashed… so that put me into a pretty foul mood. After a morning touring the NBC studios and learning about John D. Rockefeller, Jr., we headed over to Central Park West intending to visit the American Museum of Natural History. Signe's cousin had provided us with a few options suggestions for lunch in that area and we chose Good Enough To Eat to have brunch because of its high Yelp ratings and its listing in the Michelin Red Book.
Good Enough To Eat was not a good choice for a party of five to have a quick brunch at - there's basically only one table big enough to sit five (and they just wouldn't leave), so we waited outside for about 45 minutes. If you're a smaller group, the line moves fairly rapidly. While we waited, the line behind us disappeared completely twice.

Tina and I met our good friends Trevor and Signe. We haven't seen them in about three and a half years (since our wedding where Trevor served as Best Man) because they were teaching English in Japan. After a brief stroll in Central Park, we went into FAO Schwarz to warm up and have a little breakfast.
Having had an egg cream at Carnegie Deli the previous day, I tried the one at FAO Schwarz's cafe (called FAO Schweetz). It wasn't as foamy as the one at Carnegie Deli, tasted less like Hershey's, but wasn't exceptional. I think you probably have to have grown up drinking egg creams to find them special.
