What I Ate: February 22, 2008

At lunch, we went to the Carnegie Deli to try their famous pastrami. We didn't know what to expect except sandwiches that featured so much meat that it was unlikely anyone would be able to eat the whole thing. We ordered a Woody Allen (half corned beef and half pastrami) and the first thing that struck us was just how flavorful the pastrami was. It wasn't overly salty, in fact the salt level was quite low and mild and you can really taste the spices they use - but not enough to discern them individually. It was some good pastrami. The pastrami was so good in fact that eating the corned beef became out the question. When there's so much pastrami, why both with the corned beef?

We flew to New York today so ended up eating lunch during the five hour flight. Virgin America serves food a la carte using a touch screen menu system to order and instant credit card payment. We ordered a steak sandwich ($9) that featured tenderloin with mozzarella cheese and basil pesto on ciabatta. It was pretty decent as airline food goes, but of course is hard to compare against food freshly prepared.

For lunch, I ate some leftovers from the previous night - rice with stewed pork ribs and gizzards.
For dinner, Tina's parents provided us with rice, shrimp, and napa cabbage cooked with potatoes and bean thread noodles.

For lunch, I heated up a Trader Joe's Beef Tamale.
I followed it up with a Chicken Chile Verde Burrito, also from Trader Joe's.

Lunch was left over chow fun and beer with snow peas.
We went to a Kosher Mediterranean restaurant called The Golden Ball in Santa Clara for dinner. As usual when I go to a new restaurant, I order a few different items to try out. We ordered a shawarma pita, chicken shish kabob plate (I asked the order taker if he recommended chicken or beef and after quite some time he responded with chicken), a falafel side order, and a grape drink.

Tina brought home some In-N-Out for lunch. This was the worst packing job I've seen anyone from In-N-Out do before.

I had lunch with my men's group at Togo's. I ordered a meatball sub with provolone and jalapenos. Apparently, Togo's (at least the one we were at) does not have jalapenos, so they stuck pepperoncinis into my sandwich. That wasn't the flavor that I was going for, so I pulled them out.

For lunch, I went to Pizz'a Chicago in Santa Clara and read a novel while dining on an Apple Walnut Salad. A whole salad is a bit much to have for one person I think - next time I'll have to find someone to split it with.
