I snapped this shot of a kittiwake in flight while strolling along the harbor in Seward, Alaska.

  • I took a picture (okay, several, of varying quality) of a similar looking bird when I was up in Alaska… and promptly got made fun of by friends and family, who all told me I wasted a lot of time taking a picture of a plain boring seagull (we live in New England and vacation frequently on the coast of Maine, where I admit, there are a lot of seagulls).

So, thank you for the picture, which inspired me to do a little research and learn that there are many many types of gulls, and that my friend from Alaska is not quite the same as the ones found around where we live. And in fact, I believe he is a black-legged kittiwake

Also, thanks for the website - I'm enjoying looking at your pictures. It is inspiring me to both take more pictures and to think about ways to get back into regular blogging.

  • Your welcome - and don't listen to your friends when they make fun of you. I take a lot of pictures of birds (my wife says, "more ducks?") because I think their wings are cool - and because they are there.

  • "Because they are there" is the best reason to take pictures of things. :)
