Pao's Mandarin House (Lakeway, Texas)

Dec. 27, 2008 - Lunch
Pao's Mandarin House
2300 Lohman's Spur, Lakeway, TX
512-263-8869
Highly Recommended Dishes: None
Avoid Like the Plague: None
Pigs Ears - Good texture; a little mild
Spicy Cucumber - a bit too sweet but flavor of Chinese pepper was welcome; some pieces were nice and crisp while others were soft and mushy (blech)
Shao Bing with beef - tasty but sesame bun (shao bing) could have been thicker
Chives Box - okay taste, dough was too tough - prefer pan fried over deep fried
Drunken chicken - tasted odd to Tina but it reminded me of the drunken chicken my mother and grandfather made as I grew up
Sheng jian bao - finely crispy bottom, filling was a little bland, soy sauce helped
Many guides list Pao's Mandarin House as one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Austin area. It could very well be the case - we cannot yet confirm or deny. Unfortunately, it leaves much to be desired as far as Chinese restaurants in general go and we hope that it truly isn't the best that Austin has to offer.
