Photo of the Day: My Kind of Burger
Posted 2 January, 2009 at 9:30am by Michael Chu(Filed under: Food, Photography)
Hamburgers are good food. A patty of ground beef cooked until browned on the outside set inside a bun. My favorite is probably In-N-Out's Double-Double which is near perfect with the textural and flavor differences between the soft sponge bread bun, crisp fresh lettuce, crunchy nearly-raw onions, chewy meat patties, and moist sauce all in the same bite. Sometimes, I want a different burger that's a little more and for those days there's The Counter. The Counter is a new kind of burger joint where you build your own burger on paper from a large collection of possible choices and, when it's made for you, eat it while enjoying a nice glass of wine. When I go to The Counter, I usually end up with a burger that looks something like this.

One of the things about leaving Santa Monica that I miss dearly is the loss of The Counter, which was half a block from my office. At least once a week I got dinner from there. Their success is well deserved, and their expansion is exciting. They're planning two locations in New York, but I suspect it's at least another year before they arrive.
Incidentally, the cheese looks spectacular.

Never thought about putting a friend egg on a burger…
Will likely try the Palo Alto location nest week.
While I dig In-n-Out a much as the next guy…their fries suck. I'm sorry, but they do.

Red Robin's been putting a fried egg on their "Royal" burgers for as long as I can remember. It really does take the burger to the next level taste-wise.
I actually kind of like In-N-Out's fries - they taste like potatoes and nothing else. There are better fries out there, but I do enjoy the In-N-Out fries.

The Counter's fries are okay. Not great but okay. That they come out as an appetizer is odd. The Counter has a good healthier option called The Hobo Pack. I recommend that. Then again, if you're putting a fried egg on a piece of beef, fries may make little difference.

Yeah… definitely not a meal I would do too often. The sweet potato fries are pretty good but the onion strings are my favorite (with some Ranch or aioli).
