April 3, 2009 (KFC, Hong Kong Saigon Seafood Harbor Restaurant)
Posted 4 April, 2009 at 1:11am by Michael Chu(Filed under: Food, What I Ate)
For lunch, I grabbed a box of ten hot wings from KFC. Sometimes, I just can't fight the craving - they are tasty.
After a busy day, Tina and I headed over to Hong Kong Saigon Seafood Harbor Restaurant (1135 N Lawrence Expy, Sunnyvale, CA - (408) 734-2828) for some dinner. We ordered several dishes where the ingredients were not what we normally get to eat.
We started with a claypot of House Special Shark's Fin Soup with Chicken. The soup was very tasty and unctuous (a lot of gelatin must have been dissolved into the soup - it was awesome). The shark's fin was genuine and had a very delicate texture and flavor. Added a tad of vinegar helped bring out the flavors as we drank and ate the soup.
We also ordered Sauteed Frog with Ginger and Scallions. This was the whole frog (not just the legs). I think I prefer to just eat legs since the body gets chopped up and some small bone shards result.
Deer tendon. I loved this dish - the tendon was tender and flavorful (sometimes beef tendon can be bland).
Sweet potato greens. A huge quantity of greens were cooked in a savory broth and served with dried shrimp, dried scallops, and roasted garlic. Also well executed.
We felt the dishes we ordered were made very well. In addition, the staff was extremely attentive for a Chinese family-style restaurant. They knew the food very well and clearly took pride in the quality of food they were serving which is definitely not what we're used to in a Chinese restaurant. The meal ended with a complimentary bowl of red bean soup.

That was some meal at HK Saigon. I had a better experience there for dinner service than the midday dim sum.
