What I Ate: May 12, 2009 (Eddie V's Edgewater Grille)
Posted 12 May, 2009 at 11:39pm by Michael Chu
Lunch:
Made crepes with homemade chicken stock, eggs, and flour. Ate them with left over turnip greens and sausage.
Dinner:
Eddie V's Edgewater Grille (301 E 5th St, Austin, TX - (512) 472-1860). This is a local favorite in Austin - lots of highly rated reviews. I went to see if it's all that, and it really wasn't. The food isn't bad, but it's not priced appropriately to the level of execution. Seafood was generally good, but the steak was merely better than average - which makes it's $40 price point a joke. Sure it was USDA Prime (wonderful marbling) but the texture was chewy and it was rare that I got a bite without gristle (this could have been solved by better lighting - I really couldn't see what I was eating). Flavor was also pretty mild - not much beefiness.

What I Ate: May 11, 2009 (Cissi's Market)
Posted 11 May, 2009 at 10:40pm by Michael Chu
Lunch: I made a couple quick sandwiches with cured meats, provolone, and bread. The crust of the bread had started to dry out a bit, so I sliced the harder portions off and made toasted open faced sandwiches with those pieces.

What I Ate: May 10, 2009 (Golden Chick)
Posted 10 May, 2009 at 9:21pm by Michael Chu
Lunch: I've wanted to try the fried chicken from a Texas chain called Golden Chick. I bought a three piece meal of dark meat, fried okra, and mashed potatoes. The chicken was okay (I still prefer the flavor of KFC). The fried okra was a little bland (as was the batter on the chicken). Simply adding a little salt would make the batter for both chicken and okra much better. The mashed potato was down right disgusting. I had one bite which tasted like vegetable oil and artificial butter flavoring and had to toss the rest (but not before I gave Tina a little nibble). We also got a small order of corn nuggets which were a little disappointing. Both Tina and I were expecting deep fried balls of corn but what we got was deep fried binder with some creamed corn mashed in with it.
Dinner: We cooked up a couple packets of Nong Shim brand seafood ramen which we had picked up from Hong Kong supermarket on Friday. I augmented it with a few shrimp.

What I Ate: April 9, 2009

Lunch: Left over yang zhou chow fan from Din Ho Chinese BBQ with a couple pieces of duck.
Dinner: After running around all day trying to replace our dishwasher, we found ourselves at the Lowe's on Stassney in Austin around 8pm. Next to the Lowes is a Fiesta market where we found a shaved ice and roasted corn stance. It sounded like a perfect dinner (it was over 90°F today), so we bought a large watermelon shaved ice and a couple roasted corns. I didn't have my camera with me, so you'll have to suffer through my low quality, poor color camera phone pictures.

What I Ate: May 7, 2009 (Farm to Plate)
Posted 7 May, 2009 at 10:05pm by Michael Chu
Breakfast: Cinnamon Roll (see yesterday)
Lunch: I made a sandwich out of left over roast chicken breast, strawberry jam, and spring greens on sandwich bread. I thought about making gravy out of stock I made from the chicken bones, but decided to eat immediately instead.
Dinner: We went out to the Farm to Plate event run by Austin's Sustainable Food Center. Farm to Plate is an annual fundraising event featuring local chefs, wineries, breweries, farmers, and other food artisans with a focus on sustainability. I think it was the first time we did something social since we moved to Austin, so it was a welcome evening of good food, interesting conversations, and wonderful people. (We ended up eating with two interesting women - Suzy and Stefania. Suzy's retired and Stefania currently marketing for Aliseo Foods, a provider of blood orange juice imported from Italy.)

So, I was going to stop posting What I Ate, but, due to popular demand, I'm going to try to continue it. However, I'm going to be very short with my descriptions. If you want to know more, you'll have to post a comment and ask. Hopefully, that'll save some time.
Here's the make up pictures from yesterday.
What I Ate is no more

Due to the demands on my time having to deal with the aftermath of the recent move from California to Texas, managing a lawn and major housework for the first time, a reduction in available free time, and for personal reasons, I will no longer be posting What I Ate anymore. Thanks for watching.

I had leftover dumplings that Tina pan-fried for lunch.
We didn't have any groceries, so Tina went out and bought groceries. When she got home, she had brought a roasted chicken back from HEB. We ate half the chicken along with salad and bread for dinner.
What I Ate: May 4, 2009 (GattiTown)
Posted 4 May, 2009 at 8:09pm by Michael Chu
I had my car serviced at the Firestone in Southpark Meadows today. They were supposed to finish within two hours, but ended up taking longer than they expected. Because of this, we ate lunch near the Firestone - our two closest choices were Chinese buffet and GattiTown (which we believed served spaghetti). We walked over to GattiTown which turned out to be like Chuck E'Cheese - pasta, pizza, and games. We purchased two normal buffet tickets (no games) and I loaded up a plate of salad and two plates of pasta.
For dinner, Tina and I went over to her parents' home where we had homemade dumplings.
