Cherimoya
Posted 7 June, 2009 at 10:40pm by Michael Chu(Filed under: Food, What I Ate)
So, I've never had a cherimoya, the South American fruit, before.
I tried one today (at the steep price of $5) and found mine to be very sweet with a flavor that reminded me of mild pear and bananas. The fruit also has a fermented taste, but I may have had an overripe one. The texture was interesting - it seemed to flake like a cooked fish and each flake was both smooth and grainy (like a ripe Bartlett pear). There were also many black seeds about the size of a Jelly Belly jelly bean. The flesh of the fruit was smooth enough and soft enough to just stick it in my mouth and spit out the seeds. I'm not sure I'd get another one at this price, but I may be willing to try it again in the future if I see it for $2 or less. It is definitely worth trying.

I think you described the flavor well, though it looks like you got an overripe one.

I would say so, too..overripe. Funny that you've never had one, as we carried them in the rural Wisconsin Piggly Wiggly I worked at (in the produce department) almost 10 years ago.

I've seen them often enough in California, just never picked one up. My mom actually grabbed it and said she hadn't had one in over twenty years, so that's why we got it.
We'll have to try one that's not as overripe in the future.

How do you check for ripeness? Is it soft-yielding flesh?

The skin isn't as hard or armor-like as it might look. Should yield to gentle pressure just as a pear or peach would.

Used to have Cherimoya as a kid living in Chile, and what my mother used to do was make a type of fruit salad out of it by serving orange juice over it and serving it chilled. It's really good as the cherimoya kinda thickens the juice.
