What I Ate: July 1, 2009
Posted 1 July, 2009 at 11:04pm by Michael Chu(Filed under: Food, What I Ate)
Lunch: I ate some left over deli items we had - mortadella, black forest ham, head cheese, cucumbers, and rosemary and olive oil bread with an egg fried sunny side up.
Dinner: Tina cooked an oxtail with daikon soup.
When she said we didn't have any carbs to pair with the soup (we had finished the bread), I suggested rice. She said that you can't pair rice with soup - it should be a bun or some other wheat product. So I jumped up and grabbed some flour and water to start a dough for cong you bing (scallion pancakes).
Tina also cooked a bowl of dried bean curd and bell peppers with spicy black bean sauce as well as reheating the leftover broccoli rabe.

Maybe I'm strange but I've paired rice with soup before.

You are not strange… rice can definitely be paired with soup. It's just that I'm from northern China, and growing up we often paired dough things (steamed buns, scallion pancakes, etc.) with hearty soups and that's what I'm used to :).

Do you have a recipe for the scallion pancakes?
I'm guessing similar to a flour tortilla recipe but with some butter or shortening and baking powder/soda?
