Lunch: We tried Guero's (1412 South Congress Avenue, Austin, TX‎ - (512) 707-8232‎) for lunch. Sitting at the taco bar, we couldn't help but get excited about the food as three Latina women made fresh corn torillas before our very eyes.

I started with a turkey tamale (a special that they only serve during Thanksgiving and Christmas) and found it to be mushy and grainy and not particularly good. The flavor of the masa was particularly weak and the texture was a bit off putting.

Tina ordered a guacamole taco (which had nothing but guacamole - a particularly unflavorful guacamole at that) and a Chicken Especial which was quite tasty and by far the best thing we tried at Guero's (aside from the tortilla chips which are crunchy, flaky, and excellent).

I had the fish taco and al pastor taco. Both were underseasoned, low in flavor, and lacked any complexity. This is particularly unforgivable since so many places make a delicious al pastor. The worst part of all this is that the tortillas were not very good. You can barely taste corn and there isn't even a hint of lye-treated meal. What a disappointment.

Dinner: I ate a big bowl of spinach salad with chicken at Central Market and enjoyed it.
